Assembly & Disassembly: Further Responsibilities

An A/D director must know when crew members who will be out of the operator's view enter an area where the worker could be injured by equipment. An A/D director's responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensure operators are informed when a worker could be injured by equipment and that equipment is not used until worker is safe.
  • Keep employees from under the boom, jib, or other components when pins are being removed.
  • Ensure that rate capacity limits are always followed during A/D.
  • Confirm that equipment is stable after pin removal.
  • Ensure counterweights are adequate.
  • Ensure boom hoist brakes are tested and work properly.
  • Ensure backward movement is stable.
  • Prevent manufacturer's cantilevered boom sections from being exceeded.
  • Make information on component weights available.
  • Make sure components and their configurations comply with manufacturer's injunctions.

Please note that there are also specifications for outriggers, stabilizers, booms and jibs, and rigging. If these are being used, consult §1926.1404.
