Criteria for Certification: Technical Knowledge
The written exam for the operator's certification also includes a "Technical Knowledge" portion. Operators must know general technical information related to various aspects of equipment use, including but not limited to the following:
- Functions and limitations of cranes and their attachments
- Basic terms for cranes and crane use
- Instrument and gauge reading
- Inspection requirements for equipment and work sites
- Load capacities
- Load movement
- Wind conditions
- Rope use
- Rigging devices
- Limitations of protective measures for electrical dangers
- Fundamentals of machine power flow systems (mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and combination)
In addition, operators need to know how to effectively communicate with site supervisors, the crew, the signal person, and any other pertinent personnel.
29 CFR §1926 Subpart CC, Appendix C, details the requirements, which are lengthy. Employers should consult this code to ensure that the training program meets all requirements for equipment use.
Retraining
Employer must provide retraining in relevant topics for each operator when there is an indication that retraining is necessary.
