Criteria for Certification
Certifications test the operator's ability to safely operate a specific piece of equipment, including the following:
- Capacity to read and locate information in equipment manuals (or other materials) related to safe equipment operation
- Understanding of controls and operations
- Ability to calculate load/capacity information for a variety of equipment configurations (manually or with a calculator)
- Knowledge of procedures for preventing and responding to power line contact
- Technical knowledge of the supporting ground and surface's ability to support expected loads, site hazards, and site access
- Skills and knowledge to safely operate the equipment
- Ability to recognize and avert risk when necessary
- The "Technical Knowledge Criteria" detailed in Appendix C of Subpart CC of 29 CFR §1926. (You will learn about this in the next slide.)
This ability is demonstrated through a written test. Additionally, operators must demonstrate the following in a practical test:
- The ability to properly inspect equipment prior to use (you learned about this in "Inspections"; it is also detailed in §1926.1412(d))
- Skills for operating and maneuvering equipment
- The ability to apply load chart information
- The ability to apply safe procedures for shutting down and securing equipment
