Crawler Locomotive & Truck Cranes - Additional Safety Requirements
There are a few other safety regulations of note for crawler locomotive and truck cranes:
- Remember that rail clamps cannot be used as a method of prohibiting a locomotive crane from tipping.
- Remember that a ballast or counterweight is crucial to crane operation. Cranes cannot be used without a manufacturer-specified ballast or counterweight in place. The exception to this is truck cranes, which "may be operated temporarily with special care and only for light loads without full ballast or counterweight in place."
- Keep a carbon dioxide, dry chemical, or equivalent fire extinguisher in the cab or in the crane's vicinity.
- Do not swing the crane so it could potentially be hit by railways cars on the track adjacent.
- Confirm any cars on an adjacent track are not and will not be in motion. Always use proper flags during this action.
