Engineer & Manufacturer Requirements for Tower Cranes & Derricks

Both tower cranes and derricks require the additional services of an engineer to verify the equipment's structural stability and if the equipment meets manufacturer requirements.

  • Plumb tolerance. Tower erection must follow the manufacturer's requirements for plumb tolerance and be verified by an engineer.
  • Counterweight/ballast placement. A counterweight or ballast must be in place in accordance with manufacturer's requirements (or a professional engineer who is familiar with the equipment).
  • Sign size and location. Both must meet manufacturer requirements; where these are unavailable, a professional engineer familiar with the equipment must approve the size and location of any signs.
  • Foundations and structural supports. Both may be designed by the manufacturer or engineer.
  • Host structure. An engineer must verify that the host structure can sustain force from braces, brace anchorages, and supporting floors.
