General Safety Guidelines
General safety guidelines for working around mechanical equipment apply to working with cranes and other hoisting equipment. Always observe the following guidelines:
- Aisles, loading docks, doorways, and areas where turns are made must be cleared and kept in good condition; permanent aisles must have markings indicating them as such.
- Storage areas must be clean and not accumulate materials that could lead to hazards related to falls, trips, explosions, fires, or pests.
- Clearance limits must be clearly marked with clearance signs.
- Rolling railroad cars must have protectors (such as bumper blocks) when located in a work or high traffic area.
- Covers or guardrails must be present to protect workers from hazards (such as open pits, tanks, vats, and ditches).
