Operational Testing & Maintenance
Operational tests are necessary for all new or altered cranes. These tests ensure the crane complies with regulations for hoisting, lowering, trolley travel, bridge travel, limit switches, and locking and safety devices. Test reports must be on file and readily available.
Maintenance
Preventative maintenance must be based on the crane manufacturer's recommendations.
Before maintenance, the crane must be placed where it will not interfere with other cranes or worksite operations. Its controls must be in the "off" position. The main or emergency switch must be open and locked in the "open" position. The crane must have "out of order" or "warning" signs on it and on the floor beneath or on the hook.
If the crane has to be in an area where there are operational cranes or equipment, rail stops or other items should be in place to prohibit contact.
Once repairs have been completed, the crane cannot operate until all guards are in place, all safety devices activated, and all maintenance equipment removed.
