Overhead & Gantry Cranes - Application of Trolleys & Bridges Brakes
29 CFR §1910.179 provides details on how trolley and bridge brakes must be applied.
For trolleys, a drag brake may be used in order to hold the trolley in a desired position on the bridge. This also helps to stop the equipment from moving once the power is off.
Bridge brakes require the following:
- For cab-operated cranes with a cab on the bridge, a bridge brake is required. (See the previous slide or 29 CFR §1910.179 (5)(f)(4) for requirements.)
- For cab-operated cranes with a cab on the trolley, a holding-type bridge brake is required.
- For remote and pulpit-operated crane bridge with drives on the floor, a non-coasting mechanical drive brake is required.
