Overhead & Gantry Cranes - Cabs

Cabs and cab protective equipment must be arranged so that all operating handles are within easy reach of the operator when facing the area to be served by the load hook, or while facing the direction of travel. The operator must have a full view of the load hook from all positions in the cab.

Other requirements regarding cabs include the following:

  • The cab's location must ensure a minimum of 3 inches clearance from all fixed structures within its area of possible movement.
  • Steps on a fixed ladder, stairs, or platform to the crane car or bridge walkway must not be more than 12 inches high. (Please note that there are additional requirements for fixed ladders; see §1910.179 for more information.)
  • Fire extinguishers must not contain carbon tetrachloride.
  • The cab's lighting must allow the operator to see clearly enough to perform his/her work.
