Overhead & Gantry Cranes - Electrical Requirements
In addition to the general guidelines presented earlier, there are electrical safety requirements for cranes and other hoisting equipment. They include but are not limited to the following:
- The control circuit voltage must not exceed 600 volts for AC or DC.
- The voltage at pendant push-buttons must not exceed 150 volts AC and 300 volts DC.
- Where multiple conductor cable is used with a suspended pushbutton station, the station must be supported in some satisfactory manner that will protect the electrical conductors against strain.
- Pendant control boxes must be constructed to prevent electrical shock and must be clearly marked for identification of functions.
- Equipment must be situated in a way that avoids exposure to live parts and eliminates the possibility of accidental contact during normal operations and operating conditions.
- Electrical equipment should be protected from dirt, grease, oil, and moisture.
- Guards for live parts must be substantial and located so that they cannot be accidentally deformed and make contact with the live parts.
