Overhead & Gantry Cranes - Ropes
The crane manufacturer's recommendations for hoisting ropes, including socketing, drum securing, hooks, and equalizers, must always be followed. Additionally, the operator should always follow this formula:
The rated load divided by the number of parts of rope must not exceed 20 percent of the nominal breaking strength of the rope.
Consult 29 CFR §1910.179 for the following:
- Drum securing steps and regulations
- Proper use of rope clips attached with U-bolts
- Equalizers for easing tension with ropes
- Hooks (specifically meeting manufacturer's requirements and not overloading them)
