Safety Devices

Operators may not use lifting equipment until applicable safety devices are working properly. The following safety devices are required on all equipment covered by 29 CFR §1926 Subpart CC, unless otherwise specified:

  • Boom stops (with the exception of derricks and hydraulic booms).
  • Jib stops, if a jib is attached (except for derricks).
  • Locks for equipment with foot pedal brakes.
  • An integral holding device/check valve for hydraulic outrigger jacks and hydraulic stabilizer jacks.
  • Rail clamps and rail stops for equipment on rails (except portal cranes).
  • A crane level indicator (either built-in or available while operating the equipment). This requirement does not apply to portal cranes, derricks, floating cranes/derricks and land cranes/derricks on barges, pontoons, vessels or other means of flotation.
  • A horn (either built-in or immediately available).

If any of the above-mentioned devices are not working properly, the equipment must be taken out of service and operations must not resume until the device is working properly. Should one of the above-mentioned devices stop functioning properly during operations, the operator must safely stop all operations.
