Work Area Control

The swing radius of a rotating crane, derrick, or hoist specifically can hit, pinch, or crush an employee. Employers should do the following to ensure worker safety as it relates to swing radius risks:

  • Train personnel to identify struck-by and pinch/crush hazard areas posed by the rotating superstructure.
  • Fence off the hazard areas with control lines, warning lines, railings, or other barriers.
  • Ensure the operator is informed before an employee enters a hazard area and that the operator does not rotate the superstructure until he/she knows the employee is safe.
  • Develop safe communication operation systems whenever any part of a crane/derrick may be within the working radius of another crane/derrick.
