Dusts & Fibers

Dusts are solid particles that are formed by handling, crushing, grinding, drilling, or blasting materials. Fibers are solid particles whose length is at least three times greater than their width.

Dusts are measured as a concentration of airborne particles in a given space and are measured in either milligrams or micrograms per cubic meter of air (shown as either mg/m3 or µg/m3). Fibers are measured in fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc).

Dust and fibers can irritate the eyes and nose, and prolonged exposure to toxic dust can result in chronic health effects. Examples of dusts and fibers found in general industry include dust from cutting chemical-treated fabrics in a factory, or cotton dusts from processing pesticide-treated cotton.
