Chemical Hygiene Officer

Employers must designate a chemical hygiene officer when a workplace necessitates the use of hazardous chemicals. A chemical hygiene officer is an employee who is qualified by training or experience to provide technical guidance in the development and implementation of a Chemical Hygiene Plan.

A Chemical Hygiene Plan is a written program that is developed and implemented by the employer. The plan sets forth procedures, equipment, PPE, and work practices that are capable of protecting employees from the health hazards presented by hazardous chemicals used in that particular workplace.

The term "health hazard" refers to a chemical that is classified as a posing one of the following hazardous effects:

  • Acute toxicity
  • Skin corrosion or irritation
  • Serious eye damage or irritation
  • Respiratory or skin sensitization
  • Germ cell mutagenicity
  • Carcinogenity
  • Reproductive toxicity
  • Specific target organ toxicity
  • Aspiration hazard
