Planning

Working in cold environments requires proper preparation, especially in severe winter weather conditions. If you are working outdoors, it is important to periodically check the weather reports. In cases of extreme weather conditions, consider postponing work to a warmer day, or schedule work during the warmest part of the day. Use the wind chill index to evaluate the cold hazard rather than just the air temperature.

If you are working indoors in a cold environment, take readings of the temperature and air movement in all cold areas at the start, middle, and end of each shift, or at least every four hours.
