Slips, Trips, and Falls

Cold stress can contribute to other hazards, such as slips, trips, and falls, especially when it impairs your motor coordination.

Walking on ice is extremely dangerous. Many cold-weather injuries result from falls on ice-covered sidewalks, steps, and driveways. Keep your steps and walkways as free of ice as possible by using rock salt or another chemical de-icing compound. Sand may also be used on walkways to reduce the risk of slipping.

Additional recommendations to prevent slips, trips, and falls on ice include the following:

  • Wear proper footwear that has good rubber treads.
  • Take short steps.
  • Walk at a slow pace so that you can react quickly to a change in traction.
