Snow Removal Injuries
Cold stress is a hazard during snow removal, which is a particularly strenuous activity. In addition to cold stress, there is a potential for exhaustion, dehydration, back injuries, and heart attacks during snow removal. This type of work also increases the risk of cold stress.
To prevent injuries during snow removal, workers should implement the following best practices:
- Take frequent breaks in a warm area.
- Scoop small amounts of snow at a time.
- When possible, push snow instead of lifting it to reduce exhaustion and back injuries.
- Use a proper lifting technique, which includes keeping the back straight, lifting with the legs, and avoiding twisting or turning of the body.
