Trench Foot First Aid
Workers suffering from trench foot should use the following first aid guidelines:
- Remove shoes or boots and wet socks.
- Dry feet and slowly warm the affected area.
- Avoid walking, as this may cause tissue damage.
- Elevate feet to reduce swelling.
- Carefully clean the affected area and wrap it loosely with sterile dressing, taking care not to break any blisters, as this may lead to infection.
- Seek medical attention. Severe cases of trench foot can cause disabilities and even require amputation.
The best approach to prevent trench foot is to keep your feet clean and dry. Check them regularly, and change socks and shoes if your feet get wet from water or sweat. Avoid wearing tight socks, which reduces circulation.
