Configuration Hazards

Configuration hazards include piping, sloping flows, tunnels, and anything obstructive within the confined space. You must ensure that thorough checks of the confined space have been conducted before an entry to ensure that there are no configuration hazards present.

Physical Configuration Hazards

Physical hazards to entrants include the use of ladders and scaffolding, poor lighting, and bends in tunnels and narrow areas can be physical hazards to entrants. Ensure that your entrant or entrants are aware of these hazards so that they can proceed accordingly or find a way to eliminate the hazard.

Mechanical Configuration Hazards

Mechanical hazards, which include things like blades or falling objects, can present serious hazards to entrants. If there is a hazard of falling objects, implement safe work procedures to avoid them, like scheduling work activity so that no worker is working above another. Other mechanical hazards can include entanglement, crushing, cutting, piercing, or shearing of parts of a person's body. These hazards can be avoided through inspection prior to entry and continuous housekeeping.
