Hot Work Permit

The hot work permit outlines safe work practices, engineering controls, and PPE requirements that must be followed. Similar to confined spaces, hot work training should be based on the contents of the written program and revised to ensure all procedures are current. If hot work is being performed, the competent person supervisor is in charge of ensuring that there is a hot work permit in addition to the confined spaces permit. Before a hot work permit is authorized, equipment must be in satisfactory condition, a fire watch must be present with a fire extinguisher, and combustibles must be kept at least 35 feet away from the hot work being performed.

The following information is included in a hot work permit:

  • Personnel involved
  • Safety checks
  • Fire watch procedures
  • Emergency procedures
  • Supervisor signature

The permit must be retained for one year from the date of entry.
