Regulatory Agencies
OSHA is the main federal agency charged with the enforcement of safety and health legislation, including within confined spaces. Confined spaces regulations for competent persons for this course can be found in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is a federal agency that is responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness. Although NIOSH is not a regulatory agency like OSHA, it has the power to conduct on-site investigations to determine the toxicity of materials used in a confined space. It is important to adhere to NIOSH's recommendations and insights when working in confined spaces.
