Rescue

When planning for confined space emergencies, you must determine what type of rescue will be possible, who will perform the rescue, and how it will be done.

The three types of rescues are:

  1. In-house rescue - The rescue team must enter the space. This should only be done by properly trained personnel with the necessary safety equipment.
  2. Outside rescue - For example, the local fire department.
  3. Non-entry rescue - The attendant and rescue team help someone out of a confined space without entering it themselves.

The type of rescue conducted depends on the type of rescue an employer wishes to employ and the situation at hand. For in-house rescue services, rescuers must possess the same level of training as authorized entrants. Rescuers must also simulate an actual rescue involving real people or mannequins at least once every 12 months. Additionally, at least one member within the in-house rescue team must be trained in first aid and CPR.
