The following is a brief breakdown of the main topics covered in each SDS section:
- Section 1 - Chemical product and company information
- Section 2 - Composition and information on ingredients: contains a list of OSHA hazardous components
- Section 3 - Hazard identification, including emergency overview: provides information on the potential adverse effects and symptoms from misuse of material
- Section 4 - First aid measures and symptoms: provides instructions in the case of accidental exposure that requires immediate treatment
- Section 5 - Basic fire fighting guidance and measures: describes fire and explosive properties for avoiding and fighting fires and sets out standards for flash points and explosive limits
- Section 6 - Accidental release measures: describes actions to be taken to minimize the adverse effects of an accidental spill, leak, or release of material
- Section 7 - Procedures for safe handling and storage practices
- Section 8 - Exposure controls and personal protection
- Section 9 - Physical and chemical properties additions data
- Section 10 - Stability and reactivity: describes conditions to be avoided
- Section 11 - Toxicological information: background toxicological information, compounds, or both
- Section 12 - Ecological information: information on the effects hazardous materials may have on plants, animals, and the environment
- Section 13 - Appropriate disposal measures
- Section 14 - Transport information: provides basic shipping classification information

As an entry supervisor, you should use the SDS to become familiar with a hazardous substance, its characteristics, the PPE, symptoms, and emergency response.
