The supervisor of a team is the person in charge of overseeing all confined space operations from pre-entry to post-entry. The supervisor decides who is qualified as an entrant, attendant, and emergency respondent. Let us now look more closely at supervisor responsibilities throughout the entry process.
As a competent person/supervisor, you must know the configuration of a confined space. You must perform the following before entering the confined space:
- Determine potential hazards during entry, including information on the mode, signs, symptoms, and consequences of exposure.
- Verify that tests specified within the entry permit have been conducted properly.
- Verify that all equipment and procedures addressed in the permit are in place before endorsing the permit and allowing entry.
- Terminates and cancel the permit as required by (e)(5) of the regulations.
- Ensure that rescue services are available and reliable communication for summoning them is in place.
- Remove unauthorized persons from confined space area
- Ensure that entry operations remain consistent with the terms of the entry permit and that acceptable entry conditions are maintained even whenever responsibility within a confined space is transferred or when hazards dictate a change.
