Training
Working in PRCS is one of the most dangerous work areas because some of the hazards are not readily visible; this is why it is important to be trained within all aspects of confined spaces. Some training is hazard specific such as how to identify atmospheric levels, engulfment hazards, and configuration hazards, while some training is safety related, such as fall protection, excavation, and equipment training. All competent persons must be properly trained to be aware of potential hazards within a confined space. This course itself is not enough to satisfy all training components within confined spaces. Other training, such as ladder safety training, must be provided by your employer or company.
Training is required in the following instances:
- Before the employee is first assigned duties
- Before there is a change in assigned duties
- If there is a new hazard within the PRCS
- If there are deviations from the permit space entry procedures
- If there is inadequate employee knowledge
Each team member should be trained in the specific duties that he or she will be assigned during entry into a confined space. General training involves exposure to hazard recognition, entry procedures, and emergency procedures. The following chart is an example of appropriate training for competent confined space personnel. However, not all training grids look like the one shown here. Confined spaces regulations do not state that all the training listed below is mandatory for each PRCS entry. It is up to you as the competent entry supervisor to determine the training needed for each team member based on the environment and job responsibilities.
