Safe work practices include lockout and tagout (LOTO), safety management, hazard communication, machine guarding, fall protection, respiratory protection, chemical hygiene, and more.
Lockout and Tagout (LOTO)
Lockout is the placement of a lockout device on an energy isolating device to control the energy source. Tagout is the placement of a tag on an energy isolating device to indicate that the device is not to operate until the tag is removed. Lockout and tagout situations include electrical LOTO, mechanical LOTO, chemical, thermal, hydraulic, and pneumatic sources. As a competent entry supervisor, you must ensure that both the installation and removal of lockout and tagout devices are performed by an authorized employee.
The following is a procedure for lockout and tagout.
- Prepare the equipment
- Shut down equipment
- Apply devices
- Verify isolation
- Perform work
- Remove devices
- Start up
Maintain documentation of instances of lockout and tagout for one year.
