Coating Operations

OSHA requires some coating operations to adhere to additional regulations to minimize the hazards and risks associated with these processes.

Flow Coating

There are OSHA requirements for flow coating, such as:

  • A direct low-pressure pumping system or a 10-gallon or smaller gravity tank must be used to supply the paint for flow coating.
  • In case of a fire, an approved heat-actuated device must shut down the pumping system.
  • Piping must be substantial and rigidly supported.

Roll Coating

When roll coating uses a flammable liquid that has a flashpoint below 140°F, prevent static electricity sparks through specific processes, as follows:

  • Bond and ground all metallic parts (including rotating parts).
  • Install static collectors.
  • Maintain a conductive atmosphere (for example, one with a high relative humidity) in the vapor area.
