Overview

Dipping and coating are industrial processes used to alter the surface of an object.

How coatings are applied varies. The following is a list of the different processes used:

  • Curtain Coating: A process where an object is guided through a curtain of fluid located in a gap between two conveyors.
  • Electroplating: The process of coating an object with a thin layer of metal (such as silver) by using electrolysis, a technique that uses a direct electric current to create an otherwise non-spontaneous chemical reaction.
  • Electrostatic detearing: Detearing is the process for removing excess, wet coating material from the bottom edge of a dipped or coated object or material.
  • Flow coating: A method of applying industrial liquid coatings where numerous individual streams of coating cover one or multiple parts that move horizontally on a conveyor.
  • Paint dipping: The process of coating an object with paint as a protective layer.
  • Pickling: The process of using baths to change the physical properties of an object.
  • Quenching: The soaking of a metal at a high temperature, above the recrystallization phase, followed by a cooling process to obtain certain, desirable, material properties.
  • Roll coating: A process where mechanical rollers are used to coat flat surfaces. This method achieves high-efficiency rates of application and automation.
  • Atomizing cleaning: A coating process that reduces particles to smaller, uniform sizes before application.
  • Non-atomized cleaning: A process for applying coatings to surfaces using controlled spraying for maximum transfer efficiency and reduced emissions.

Cleaning processes can alter the surface of an object, as follows:

  • Degreasing: The process of using chemicals to remove grease from objects.
  • Spray cleaning: A classic process embodied in most cleaning systems that uses the kinetic energy of the spray jet to apply the detergent, dislodging contaminants from the surface of the part.
  • Stripping: The process of using chemicals to remove extraneous or superficial matter from objects.
