Personal Protective Equipment
Dipping, coating, and cleaning operations raise the risk for chemical burns. Personal protective equipment (PPE) keeps the industrial worker safe when handling the abrasive chemicals associated with dipping, coating, and cleaning operations. Employers must provide PPE to employees, including respirators to protect employees from exposure to toxic substances during welding, burning, or open-flame work. Employers must also provide specific training for using the PPE based on specific job classifications, tasks, and procedures. A hazard assessment can help to identify what chemicals pose risks.
Other general guidelines regarding PPE are:
- The PPE must be readily accessible and available to employees in appropriate sizes.
- The PPE must be properly used, cleaned, or replaced as needed or discarded.
- Disposable and reusable gloves should be replaced as soon as possible if they are torn, punctured, or when their ability to function as a barrier is compromised.
- Disposable gloves must not be reused.
- Face and eye protection devices should be worn whenever splashes, sprays, and splatters may occur.
- The PPE should be removed prior to leaving the work area.
