Statistics

Dipping, coating, and cleaning operations are risky processes that can create hazards such as VOCs, chemical burns, and explosions. Note the following statistics:

  • Based on information obtained through the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Department of Commerce-Bureau of the Census, there are an estimated 2,869 aerospace facilities that could be subject to the EPA's regulations regarding air pollution from chemical process. Of this number, 1,395 produce or rework commercial products, and 1,474 produce or rework military products. The combined VOC emissions from these facilities are estimated to be over 213,000 megagrams per year or 234,000 tons per year.
  • About 45 percent of the coatings produced worldwide are used to decorate and protect new construction and maintain existing structures.
  • Overall demand for the paints and coatings industry from 2014 to 2019 is predicted to increase at an average annual rate of 3 percent in the United States and 1.5-2.5 percent in Western Europe.
  • In the emergent countries of the world, coatings are growing at a much faster rate. The best prospects for growth are in Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. Total global growth should be about six percent per year.
  • OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard covers over 43 million workers who produce or handle hazardous chemicals in more than five million workplaces across the country. The standard is expected to prevent over 500 workplace injuries and illnesses and 43 fatalities annually.
