Training

Training is critical to maintaining a safe workplace. To carry out an effective training program, employers must complete the following tasks:

  • Plan - Create a written framework for safe practices.
  • Organize - Create a training schedule, presenting best practices in an easily accessible format.
  • Implement - Train employees, monitor the effectiveness of the training, reevaluate, and adjust as needed.

Plan

Employees should be well-versed in first aid procedures for the hazards associated with dipping, coating, and cleaning operations. It is a good idea to include first aid procedures in an SDS for the handling of chemicals associated with these processes. These procedures should be posted near the dip tank and should be readily available.

Organize

Chemicals are often a part of dipping, coating, and cleaning operations. It is important to conduct a risk assessment of the workplace before handling any chemicals or equipment. Hazards can be reduced or eliminated by applying a hierarchy of controls:

  • Eliminating hazards
  • Substituting safer chemicals and processes
  • Using engineering controls
  • Taking administrative measures
  • Using PPE

An SDS and labelled containers help identify hazardous chemicals. Employees should have a basic understanding of chemicals and their incompatibility with environmental conditions and other substances.

Additional local and state regulations may apply.

Implement

Employers should supervise all workers, especially new workers that are at risk of coming into contact with corrosive substances. Supervision is important for ensuring proper use and maintenance of appropriate PPE. It is also important to make sure new workers are familiar with safe work procedures.
