Labeling

Any container of regulated waste; refrigerators or freezers that contain blood or OPIM; or any other container used to store, transport, or ship blood or OPIM must have the proper warning label attached. The warning label should be fluorescent orange or orange-red, with any lettering or symbols in a contrasting color. The labels should always bear the biohazard mark pictured below.

An entrance to an HIV or HBV research laboratory or production facility should be posted with a sign that bears the biohazard mark and follows the coloring and symbol restrictions of a biohazard label. This signage should also include the following information:

• The name of the infectious agent
• Any special requirements for entering the area
• The name and telephone number for the laboratory director or another responsible person
