Post-Exposure Evaluation
In the case of an exposure, post-exposure evaluations and follow-up should be available to all employees at no cost and at a reasonable place as part of an Exposure Control Plan. After the exposure incident is reported, the employer must allow each employee to have access to a confidential medical evaluation and follow-up, which includes at least the following elements:
- Documentation of the route of exposure and circumstances under which it occurred
- Identification and documentation of the "source individual"
- Testing of the employee for HBV, HCV, and HIV statuses as soon as possible after consent is obtained
- Post-exposure measures to prevent the spread of the disease, when medically indicated, as recommended by the CDC and the U.S. Public Health Service
- Counseling
- Evaluation of reported illnesses
