Arcing Parts, Markings, & Disconnecting Devices

Because various metals have different characteristics, the following practices must be employed:

  • The material of the conductor for devices such as pressure terminal connectors and soldering lugs must be identified and be properly installed and used.
  • Without proper device identification, conductors of dissimilar metals cannot be intermixed in a terminal or splicing connector where physical contact will occur between the conductors.
  • Where materials such as solder, fluxes, and inhibitors are used, they must be suitable for use with the conductors, installation, or equipment with which they are associated.

Connection of conductors to terminal parts must be secure without damaging the conductors and must be made by means of pressure connectors, solder lugs, or splices to flexible leads.

Soldered splices must first be spliced or joined to be mechanically and electrically secure without solder, and then soldered.

All splices and joints and the free ends of conductors must be covered with an insulation equivalent to that of the conductors or with an insulating device identified for the purpose. Wire connectors or splicing means installed on conductors for direct burial must be listed by the manufacturer for such use.
