Clearances
Different types of electrical equipment require various clearances from the ground, from building openings, and above roofs.
From Ground
Open conductors, open multi-conductor cables, and service-drop conductors of not more than 600 volts nominal must conform to the minimum clearances specified in 29 CFR 1910.304. Requirements differ by distance, voltage, and conditions.
From Building Openings
Service conductors installed as open conductors or multi-conductor cable without an overall outer jacket must have a clearance of no less than three feet from windows that are designed to be opened, doors, porches, balconies, and similar locations.
Above Roofs
Overhead spans of open conductors and open multi-conductor cables must have a vertical clearance of no less than eight feet above a roof surface. The vertical clearance above the roof level must be maintained for a distance no less than three feet in all directions from the edge of the roof. Situation-specific clearance requirements are set out in 29 CFR 1910.304.
