Specialized Purpose Equipment, Locations, and Systems

In 29 CFR 1910.306 to 1910.308, the OSHA Electrical Standard provides specific regulations for electrical installations for a variety of specialized purpose equipment. Examples of types of equipment covered in these regulations include the following:

• Electric signs and outdoor lighting
• Cranes and hoists
• Elevators, escalators, wheelchair lifts, and similar installations
• Electric welders
• Information technology equipment
• Electrically driven irrigation systems

Regulations are also set out for specific types of locations. These include water-oriented installations such as swimming pools and fountains; and attractions such as carnivals, circuses, and fairs.

Regulations are also provided for specialized electrical systems as well. These include the following:

• Fire alarm systems
• Communications systems
• Solar photovoltaic systems
• Integrated electrical systems

Under each of these regulations, the OSHA Electrical Standard sets out the types of location, installation, or systems that are covered and provides specific rules for safe electrical installations.
