Fire Detection Systems
Employers must install approved fire detection systems and maintain all systems in operable condition, except when the system is being maintained or repaired.
Fire detection equipment that has been installed outdoors or in a corrosive atmosphere must be protected from corrosion through the use of devices, such as:
- A canopy
- A hood
- Another suitable protection for detection equipment requiring weather protection
Systems must be installed to provide enough time during an emergency to activate fire extinguishing or suppression systems.
The employer must also make sure the number, spacing, and location of fire detectors is based on design data obtained from several sources, such as:
- Field experience
- Field tests
- Engineering surveys
- Manufacturer's recommendations
- Recognized testing laboratory system
