Standpipe & Hose Systems

The employer is also responsible for maintaining standpipe and hose systems, which must be located or protected against mechanical damage and promptly repaired if damaged.

Sometimes reels or cabinets are provided in the workplace to hold a fire hose. If this is the case, the reels and cabinets must meet requirements in case of a fire emergency, as follows:

  • Facilitate prompt use of the hose valves
  • Facilitate prompt use of the hose
  • Facilitate prompt use of other equipment
  • Be conspicuously identified
  • Be used only for fire equipment

Hose outlets must be located high enough above the floor to avoid being obstructed while still being accessible to employees. Every 1.5-inch or smaller hose outlet must be equipped with a hose connected and ready to use.

Standpipe hose systems must be equipped with shut-off type nozzles, and the minimum water supply must provide at least 100 gallons per minute for a period of at least 30 minutes.

The employer is responsible for having standpipe systems tested at regular intervals, according to the system's installation date.
