Importance of the Standard
As previously established, chemicals have the potential to cause or contribute to many serious health effects. Some even have the capacity to cause fires, explosions, and other serious accidents. The basic goal of the Standard is also what makes it so important: to reduce the incidence of chemical-related illnesses and injuries by ensuring that employers and employees know about work hazards and how to protect against the dangers they pose.
The requirements of the Standard can be found in Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 1910.1200. The Standard covers all hazardous chemicals and incorporates a "downstream flow of information." This means that producers of chemicals are primarily responsible for generating and dispersing information, and users of chemicals have the responsibility to obtain the information and transmit it to their own employees.
