Major Changes to the Standard

OSHA's decision to update the Standard to align with the provisions of the GHS meant that several changes were made to the Standard. The following list outlines the major changes to the Standard:

• Hazard Classification: This aspect of the Standard provides specific criteria for the classification of health and physical hazards, as well as the classification of mixtures.
• Labels: Chemical manufacturers and importers are required to provide a label that includes a harmonized signal word, pictogram, and hazard statement for each hazard class and category. The manufacturers must also provide precautionary statements, which are measures that should be taken to minimize or prevent adverse effects resulting from exposure to a hazardous chemical.
• Safety Data Sheets: The SDSs now have a specified 16-section format.
• Information and Training: Employers are required to train workers on the elements of the new labels and the format of the SDS to aid recognition and understanding of hazardous chemicals.
