OSHA's Blood-borne Pathogens Standard

OSHA's Blood-borne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) prescribes safeguards to protect workers against the health hazards caused by exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Any employee who has occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material is included within the scope of the pathogens standard. This means that employees in other types of employment, including (but not limited to) firefighters, law enforcement personnel, medical equipment repairmen, and camp counselors, are also protected by the pathogens standard.

OSHA's Blood-borne Pathogens Standard is a "performance-oriented standard." This means that the employer has the freedom to determine which employees are covered and what methods of implementation are used, as long as the methods comply with the pathogens standard and are adequate to ensure protection of workers against blood-borne pathogens.
