Immediate Evacuation Warning Signal - Design Parameters

The design parameters for the evacuation warning signal system are as follows:

  • The signal-generating system must produce the desired signal each time it is activated within one-half second of activation.
  • All components of the signal-generating system must be located to provide maximum practicable protection against damage in case of fire, explosion, corrosive atmosphere, or other environmental extremes consistent with adequate system performance.
  • The signal-generating system must be designed with the minimum number of components necessary to make it function as intended, and should use components that do not require frequent servicing, such as lubrication or cleaning.
  • Where several activating devices feed activating information to a central signal generator, failure of any activating device must not render the signal-generator system incapable of activating information from the remaining devices.
  • The signal-generating system must be designed to enhance the probability that the alarm occurs only when an immediate evacuation is warranted. The number of false alarms must not be so great that the signal will come to be disregarded, and must be low enough to minimize personal injuries or excessive property damage that might result from such evacuation.
