Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material
Technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) are naturally occurring radioactive materials that have been concentrated or exposed to the accessible environment through human activities, such as oil and gas exploration or mining; and through natural processes like leakage of radon gas into the atmosphere or through dissolution in groundwater.
"Technologically enhanced" means that the physical, chemical, and radiological properties of the radioactive material have been altered through processing or disturbed in a way that increases the potential for human and environmental exposures.
The following are the major industrial sectors that generate TENORM:
- Mining
- Energy production
- Water treatment
- Consumer products
