Injury Prevention & First Aid

NIOSH has prepared a checklist to maintain eye safety and to prevent injury in the workplace.

  1. Create a safe work environment.
    • Minimize hazards from falling or loose debris.
    • Ensure that workers' tools are effective and safety features are in place.
    • Make sure workers know how to use their tools.
    • Keep bystanders out of the work area.
  2. Evaluate safety hazards.
    • Identify primary hazards at work.
    • Identify hazards posed by co-workers, large machinery, and falling debris.
  3. Wear the correct Eye & Face Protection.
    • Make sure workers select and use the proper PPE.
    • Make sure the PPE is in good condition, fits well and will stay in place.
  4. Use and implement best practices.
    • Make sure workers brush, shake or otherwise remove dust and debris from PPE, as well as from hardhats, hair, and forehead, before removing.
    • Clean PPE regularly.
    • Do not rub eyes with dirty hands or clothing.
  5. Prepare for eye injuries and first aid situations.
    • Make sure eye washes and sterile solutions are close, and easy to find and use.
