Emergency Action Plan
Employers of more than 10 employees are required to provide an emergency action plan. This type of plan must meet certain requirements, as follows:
- Must be in writing
- Must be kept in the workplace
- Must be available to employees for review
At a minimum, emergency action plans must include the following elements:
- Procedures for reporting a fire or other emergency
- Procedures for emergency evacuation, including type of evacuation and exit route assignments
- Procedures to be followed by employees who remain to operate critical plan operations before they evacuate
- Procedures to account for all employees after evacuation
- Procedures to be followed by employees performing rescue or medical duties
- The name or job title of every employee who may be contacted by employees who need more information about the plan or an explanation of their duties under the plan
Employers must provide training to employees designated to use firefighting equipment in an emergency action plan.
Employers must review emergency action plans with each employee covered by the plan and at specific times, such as:
- When the plan is developed or the employee is initially assigned to the job
- When the employee's responsibilities under the plan change
- When the plan changes
