Training

Various training requirements apply to employees who face a risk of electrical shock. This risk specifically refers to hazards that have not been reduced to a safe level by the electrical installation requirements discussed in Section 3 - Design Safety Standards for Electrical Systems.

Employees in certain occupations face such a risk and are required to be trained. These occupations include electricians and welders.

Other types of employees also must be trained whenever their work, or the work of those they supervise, brings them or the employees they supervise within hazardous contact of exposed parts of electrical circuits operating at 50 volts or more to ground. Examples of these types of employees are as follows:

• Blue collar supervisors
• Electrical and electronic engineers
• Electrical and electronic equipment assemblers
• Electrical and electronic technicians
• Industrial machine operators
• Material handling equipment operators
• Mechanics and repairers
• Painters
• Riggers and roustabouts
• Stationary engineers
• Welders

Any other employee who also may reasonably be expected to face comparable risk of injury due to electrical shock or other electrical hazards must also be trained.
