Classification of Hazards

There are many types of confined space hazards, any one of which can injure or kill entrants. The hazards that might be present in a specific confined space are determined by the material stored or used in the confined space, the activity carried out, and the external environment.

Confined spaces can be deceiving. Often, the confined space will not appear hazardous. It may have been entered previously without incident, or it may display no apparent signs of danger. Hazards are concentrated in confined spaces, and the conditions inside a confined space can change quickly.

Confined space hazards can be grouped into three categories: atmospheric hazards, physical hazards, and psychological hazards.

It should always be assumed that the most unfavorable situation exists in every confined space.
