Communication Systems
Continuously powered communications equipment is required during emergency rescue conditions and in unsafe atmospheres. However, sometimes portable radios may not work properly in confined space configurations. There should always be a back-up form of communication in case powered communication devices fail.
Types of communication devices include:
- Battery-operated portable
- Hardwire systems
- Hand signals
- Rope signals
- Tapping codes
Rope signals may be used when powered communication equipment is not available. The OATH method is used as follows:
- 1 tug = OK. Can be to ask if OK and to answer.
- 2 tugs = Advance (Give me more rope.)
- 3 tugs = Take up rope. I am coming back.
- 4 tugs = HELP
