Fatalities and Injuries

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports an average of 20 fatalities a year from confined space hazards. From 1997-2001, there were 458 total confined space fatalities. The causes of death in confined spaces include the following:

  • 65% - hazardous atmosphere
  • 13% - engulfment
  • 7% - struck by falling object
  • 6% - heat stress or exposure
  • 4% - other

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) concluded that 60% of confined space fatalities occurred among would-be rescuers.

Rescuer fatalities can occur because the rescuer is overcome by emotions, takes unnecessary chances, does not fully understand the hazards involved, does not have a plan of action, or lacks the proper training.

Many times, these accidents could have been avoided with proper training, a confined spaces safety program, and well-planned rescue operations, including an emergency response plan. Reducing risks through proper safety and rescue training can prevent rescues from becoming body retrievals.
